The following are Obama's
Czars,
a new and influential cadre of counselors just steps from the Oval
Office whose power to direct domestic policy will rival, if not exceed,
the authority of his Cabinet.
Obama has appointed 34 "Czars." Obama's czar system
concerns some.
Here is the complete list
Obama has 'super aides' for healthcare, the
economy, energy and urban issues, with more to come -- prompting some
lawmakers and groups to worry that he may be concentrating power and
bypassing Congress.
some lawmakers and outside experts fear that
Obama is setting up a system that is not subject to congressional
oversight and creates the potential for conflict among his many
advisors.
Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.) became concerned enough
to send a cautionary letter to Obama last week. At times, he said, past
White House staffers have assumed duties that should be the
responsibility of officials cleared through the Senate confirmation
process. He cited President Bush's naming of homeland security czar Tom
Ridge as an example.
"They rarely testify before congressional
committees and often shield the information and decision-making process
behind the assertion of executive privilege," Byrd wrote of past czars
and White House staffers in similar positions. At times, he said, one
outcome has been to "inhibit openness and transparency, and reduce
accountability."
"The rapid and easy accumulation of power by
White House staff can threaten the constitutional system of checks and
balances," Byrd said.
These Czars are "Political
Officers." In the old Soviet Union, they were called Commissars.
The Executive Branch of government is organized hierarchically,
top-down, by Departments (Treasury, Defense, etc.). Each
department functions under the direction of an executive, referred to as
a "Secretary," who is confirmed by the Senate.
The appointments
of these "Czars" changes the fundamental structure of the Executive
Branch into a "matrix" structure. The czars have political power
across all of the departments within the Executive Branch.
They
speak for Obama and their function is to ensure compliance with Obama's
policies within the Executive Branch.
The American People don't
know who most of these Czars are. They've had no background
checks. There is no Congressional oversight over the Czars, unlike
a Cabinet position. They are appointed by Obama and are
extraordinarily powerful, simply because they take their direction from
and report directly to Obama.
We don't know how much money they
make. We don't know how many tax-payer dollars they oversee.
We don't know how large their staffs are. We don't know how much power they wield.
Where are the checks and
balances?
The Czars Are Unauthorized
On Feb. 25, 2009, Sen. Robert Byrd, the
longest-serving senator in history wrote a letter to Obama, detailing
his (Byrd's) concern about the number of "czars" (32-34?) Obama has
appointed. None have been confirmed by the Senate.
To
quote Sen. Byrd, "As presidential assistants and advisers, these White
House staffers are not accountable for their actions to the Congress, to
cabinet officials, or to virtually anyone but the president. They
rarely testify before congressional committees, and often shield the
information and decision-making process behind the assertion of
executive privilege. In too many instances, White House staff have
been allowed to inhibit openness and transparency, and reduce
accountability."
These czars are being paid without congressional
authorization, without having testified before any legislative
committee, without having been confirmed by anyone, and are functioning
like a fourth (illegal) arm of government.
Here's the bunch of
them.
Richard Holbrooke
Afghanistan
Ultra liberal, anti-gun former governor
of New Mexico -- pro Abortion and legal drug use.
Jeffrey Crowley
AIDS
Gay Rights activist. Believes in
gay marriage and special status, including free health care for gays.
Hannah Rosenthal
Anti-Semitism
Obama's new anti-Semitism czar serves
on the board of a controversial Israel-lobby group accused of working
against the Jewish state, while her writings suggest Israel's policies
are to blame for anti-Semitism.
Hannah Rosenthal, a former
Health Department regional director under the Clinton administration,
started her position earlier this week as the State Department's new
special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism. She previously
headed the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, an umbrella U.S. Jewish
organization.
Rosenthal, however, serves on the board of J
Street, a lobby group that is mostly led by left-leaning Israelis and
that receives funds from Arab and Muslim Americans.
J Street
brands itself as pro-Israel. It states on its website it seeks to
"promote meaningful American leadership to end the Arab-Israeli and
Israeli-Palestinian conflicts peacefully and diplomatically."
J
Street, however, also supports talks with Hamas, a terrorist group whose
charter seeks the destruction of Israel. The group opposes
sanctions against Iran and is harshly critical of Israeli offensive
anti-terror military actions.
Even the Israeli government has
been distancing itself from J Street, with its ambassador to Washington,
Michael Oren, refusing to attend its annual dinner last month.
Israeli Embassy spokesman Yoni Peled told the Jerusalem Post his
government has some "concern over certain [J Street] policies that could
impair Israel's interests."

business. Sits on the Board of Chrysler which is now Auto Union owned.
Later, was named head of Manufacturing (see "Manufacturing" below)
Dennis Ross
Central Region
Believes US policy has caused Mid East wars. Obama apologist to
the world. Anti-gun and pro-abortion.
The Lid blog has a report on Mark Lloyd, the associate general
counsel and Chief Diversity Officer at the Federal Communications
Commission, who said, "There are few things I think more frightening in
the American mind than dark skinned black men. Here I am."
He was appointed to the newly created position by Obama in early August.
Before he was appointed a Czar, Lloyd was the vice president for
strategic initiatives at the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.
His specialty is communications policy, and that policy he promotes can
only be described as having a strange obsession with promoting a racial
divide.
He is also not a big fan of the First Amendment.
While Obama is playing coy with his plans to shut down conservative talk
radio, we know what his real intentions are, due to his appointment of
Mark Lloyd. Lloyd’s view of the 1st Amendment is shocking:
"It should be clear by now that
my focus
here is not freedom of speech or the press. This freedom is all too
often an exaggeration. At the very least, blind references to
freedom of speech or the press serve as a distraction from the
critical examination of other communications policies. "[T]he
purpose of free speech is warped to protect global corporations and
block rules that would promote democratic governance."
Like many of Obama’s appointees, Lloyd worked for George
Soros, the foreign billionaire who funds anti-America groups. He
seems to be enamored with dictators and has even publicly praised
Venezuelan Communist dictator Hugo Chavez’s "incredible…democratic
revolution." He also wants to use the Fairness Doctrine to
"balance" talk radio and believes there are too many white people in the
media. He has written that unless there are "more people of color,
gays and other people…we will not change the problem." One of his
solutions to "balance" the media is to fine conservative radio stations
up to $250 million and give the proceeds to National Public Radio.

Gil Kerlikowske
Drugs
Obama will
nominate Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske to be U.S. drug czar
and remove the job's Cabinet designation, The Washington Post reported
on Wednesday.
If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Kerlikowske would
head the Office of National Drug Control Policy, which was elevated to
Cabinet level under former President George W. Bush.
The
nomination of Kerlikowske would end a long search for a candidate to
oversee U.S. efforts to fight illegal drugs. Kerlikowske was long
speculated to be the front-runner, but revelations about his stepson's
arrest on drug-related charged complicated the nomination process, the
Post reported.
In formally nominating Kerlikowske, Obama -- who
admitted using cocaine as a teenager in his memoir "Dreams from My
Father" -- would offer a vote of confidence for a nominee who could face
uncomfortable questions during the confirmation process, the newspaper
said.
The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
said, "During his eight-year tenure as Seattle's police chief, Gil
Kerlikowske has established himself as a devoted lobbyist for every
restrictive gun law proposal," said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb.
"That's pretty hypocritical of a guy whose own gun was stolen out of his
department car on a downtown Seattle street. He may pass an FBI
background check for an appointment, but he flunked the responsible gun
owner's test."
Kerlikowske has lobbied for bans on sport-utility
rifles that are owned by tens of thousands of law-abiding Washington
residents, and millions of their fellow American citizens. He
backed legislation to close the mythical "gun show loophole" with an
unsubstantiated theory that private sales put guns in the hands of
criminals. Believes no American should own a firearm.
"While he's been Seattle's police chief," Gottlieb
noted, "he's become a close ally of the anti-gun Washington CeaseFire,
but he's never bothered to sit down with gun owners to discuss crime
problems, gun safety or enforcement efforts that focus on felons rather
than firearms.
"Kerlikowske's reported appointment to a post with
the Obama administration reinforces the genuine concerns of American gun
owners that the new president is not their friend," he observed.
"The new president has surrounded himself with people who have long
anti-gun rights track records, including Joe Biden, Eric Holder, Hillary
Clinton and Rahm Emanuel. By adding Gil Kerlikowske to his inner
circle, Obama is simply confirming the adage that "you can tell a lot
about someone by the company he keeps."

Head of Federal Reserve under Jimmy Carter when US economy nearly
failed. Obama appointed head of the Economic Recovery Advisory
Board which engineered the Obama economic disaster to US economy.
Member of anti business, Progressive Policy organization.
Carol Browner
Energy Environment
When president-elect Barack Obama appointed Carol Browner to be his
"energy czar" back in December, the conservative blogosphere was
buzzing about her being a member of
Socialist
International, "the worldwide organization of social democratic,
socialist and labor parties."
At the time, she was fourth on the
website's list of members in the "Commission for a Sustainable World
Society" which
calls for "global governance" and says rich countries must shrink
their economies to address climate change.
Not any longer, although it still is
cached by Google:
CAROL M. BROWNER
Administrator
of the United States Environmental Protection Agency under President
Bill Clinton. Leading the EPA from 1993 to 2001, she was the
longest-serving Administrator in the agency’s history. Browner currently
serves on the board of several non-profit organizations, including as
chair of the National Audubon Society, one of the nation’s oldest
environmental organizations, and as a member of the Board of the
Directors of the Center for American Progress, the Alliance for Climate
Protection and the League of Conservation Voters.
Picked up
the Environment title when Van Jones quit -- see below . . .
Obama's newly
appointed "Green" Czar, was as an
admitted radical communist and black nationalist leader.
Van
Jones, president and founder of Green For All, a nonprofit organization
that advocates for building a so-called inclusive green economy, has
been tapped to serve as the special adviser for green jobs, enterprise
and innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.
According to the White House blog, Jones' duties will include helping to
craft job-generating climate policy and ensuring equal opportunity in
the administration's energy proposals.
While in jail in San
Francisco in 1992, Jones said, "I met all these young radical people of
color -- I mean really radical, communists and anarchists. And it was,
like, 'This is what I need to be a part of.' I spent the next ten years
of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to
be a revolutionary. In the months that followed, he let go of any
lingering thoughts that he might fit in with the status quo. I was a
rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on
April 29th," he said. "By August, I was a communist."
Jones,
formerly a self-described "rowdy black nationalist," boasted in a 2005
interview that his environmental activism was a means to fight for
racial and class "justice."
"I'll work with anybody. I'll fight
anybody if it will push our issues forward," he told the left-leaning
East Bay Express in a 2005 interview. "I'm willing to forgo the cheap
satisfaction of the radical pose for the deep satisfaction of radical
ends."
Chai R. Feldblum
Equal Opportunity
A law professor nominated by Obama to become a commissioner for the
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was a signatory to a radical
2006 manifesto which endorsed polygamous households and argued
traditional marriage should not be privileged "above all others."
Georgetown University Law Center professor Chai R. Feldblum,
nominated as a commissioner for the Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission (EEOC), is listed as a signatory to the July 26, 2006
manifesto "Beyond Same-Sex Marriage: A New Strategic Vision for
All Our Families & Relationships."
The manifesto’s signatories
said they proposed a "new vision" for governmental and private
recognition of "diverse kinds" of partnerships, households and families.
They said they hoped to "move beyond the narrow confines of marriage
politics" in the U.S.
Describing various kinds of households as
no less socially, economically, and spiritually worthy than other
relationships, the Beyond Marriage manifesto listed "committed, loving
households in which there is more than one conjugal partner."
Same-sex marriage, the manifesto said, should be "just one option on a
menu of choices that people have about the way they construct their
lives."
"Marriage is not the only worthy form of family or
relationship, and it should not be legally and economically privileged
above all others," the manifesto continued. "While we honor those
for whom marriage is the most meaningful personal – for some, also a
deeply spiritual -- choice, we believe that many other kinds of kinship
relationship, households, and families must also be accorded
recognition."
The manifesto listed as one of its principles
"freedom from a narrow definition of our sexual lives and gender
choices, identities, and expression."
It also charged that the
political right enforces "narrow, heterosexist definitions of marriage."

Julius Genachowski
F C C
Neil Stevens
says Julius Genachowski is
Barack Obama’s head of the Federal Communications Commission. He
thinks you’re an idiot. After famously
calling for broadly expanded FCC powers to mandate "transparency"
and "neutrality" on the Internet, and having that plan rejected by a
growing, bipartisan coalition, he now
denies he wants to regulate the Internet.
Meanwhile he also claims the FCC is
trying to "win the case" against Comcast, who has sued to get a federal
court to overturn the FCC’s claimed authority to regulate Internet
activity. But we’re supposed to believe he doesn’t want to regulate the
Internet. Right. The Wall Street Journal
says that the FCC "took a beating" during an appeals court hearing on
the case. A decision against the FCC could be crippling of Genachowski’s
plans, but unfortunately on that front there’s nothing we activists can
do but watch, and wait.
Though we can also join in the second comment period
that the FCC has opened up on Net Neutrality. Your guess is as
good as mine as to where on the FCC’s
website we can do that, though. They’re not exactly
transparent.
Sam Kass
Food
The Corruption Chronicals
says that in a comical move even for czar-happy Obama, who has
rewarded dozens of cronies with distinguished titles, the White House
has named the Obama’s personal Chicago cook as "Senior Policy Adviser
for Healthy Food Initiatives."
It’s no joke, even though is
sounds like a bad one. The Chicago chef’s rapid ascension,
reported this week by a conservative Washington D.C. newspaper, has been
kept under the radar for the last month.
Sam Kass went from being a 20-something, Windy City gourmet cook --
privately paid by the Obama’s to feed them -- to big-time White House
adviser in a matter of months.
In between, Michelle Obama made
Kass a "Food Initiative Coordinator" for her new healthy nutrition
program which is supposed to eliminate childhood obesity within a
generation, especially in the nation’s inner cities. The First
Lady claims that childhood obesity is a threat to national security and
a crisis equivalent to AIDS and youth violence.
Because it’s such
a dire situation, she has convinced her husband’s administration to
spend $400 million a year to bring "healthy foods" to low-income
neighborhoods and $10 billion to revise a decades-old federal measure
that already feeds tens of millions of poor children at school for free.
This culinary revolution no doubt requires a trusted senior policy
adviser -- like Kass -- who is an expert in healthy cuisine. The First
Lady refers to her cook as a "partner in crime" and says it’s "just
pretty powerful" to see what started out as talk in her South Side
Chicago kitchen turn into a major initiative that "hopefully will change
the way we think as a country."
Makes you wonder what Kass, who
also doubles as a White House chef, has been putting in the Obama’s food
all these years. Incidentally, the "most transparent
administration" in history doesn’t want Americans to know how much the
famous family cook earns. Although he’s an important
administration wonk, Kass’s salary is excluded in the Annual Report to
Congress on White House Staff because he’s considered "residence staff"
and those salaries don’t need to be disclosed.
More reparations from the Obamas --
$400 million a year to bring "healthy foods" to low-income neighborhoods
-- $10 billion for poor children at school for free -- "because
it’s such a dire situation..." -- another CRISIS -- thank you
Cloward
and Piven -- thank you
Rahmbo.
Everything is a crisis to these people -- except the
economy.

Retired Navy admiral. Stopped US guided missile

Foreign Relations, which blames American organizations for regional

Todd Stern
International Climate
Anti-business former White House Chief of Staff.
Strong supporter of the Kyoto Accord. Pushing hard for Cap and
Trade Bill. Blames US business for Global warming.
Stern, a
veteran of the Clinton administration, was the U.S. negotiator at the
Kyoto conference in 1997 (which called for dramatic climate change
regulations based on bogus assumptions). Had the treaty been
implemented, it would have plunged the world into economic chaos.
Since then, new evidence has revealed that the major climate models
used to justify the Global Warming alarm was, in fact, not accurate. One
would think Stern would address this, but chances are he won’t. Climate
change seems to be more about giving the government control over our
lives, than about phony climate crises. Indeed, Stern has made it clear
that he thinks international agencies, such as the United Nations,
should take the lead on forcing climate change down the throats of
national governments. Stern has even gone as far as to propose that
world powers form an “E8” group, who would meet yearly and dictate
environmental policy to the rest of the world. What about national
sovereignty? Clearly, Stern feels that’s an outdated concept.
Stern is also the
nutcase
behind the Cap and Trade proposal which, even an analysis by Obama’s own
Treasury Department concluded, would cost American taxpayers up to $200
billion dollars -- just what we need for today’s economy!
Susan P. Crawford
Internet
WorldNetDaily is
reporting that Obama's Internet czar, Susan P. Crawford, is linked
to a
Marxist-run liberal media think tank, Free Press, that advocates
government intervention in the Internet.
She was chosen to
head up the Obama transition's Federal Communications Commission Review
team. After the inauguration, Obama named her Special Assistant to
the President for Science, Technology, and Innovation policy -- or
Internet czar.
Wired magazine
calls Crawford "the most powerful geek close to the president," and
notes that prior to her work for the administration, she was a
"prolific" writer on "net neutrality."
Crawford's "One
Web Day" is also promoted on the Free Press website.
She
spoke at a May 14, 2009, "Changing Media" Free Press summit in
Washington. Crawford's "One Web Day" project, which seeks to
broaden the public's awareness of Internet and Web issues, lists the
radical ACORN as one of its
"participating organizations." Free Press" is listed as another.
The founder of Free Press,
Robert W. McChesney, is a professor at the University of Illinois
and former editor of the Marxist journal Monthly Review. In
February 2009, McChesney, an avowed Marxist, urged that capitalism be
dismantled.
"In the end, there is no real answer but to remove
brick-by-brick the capitalist system itself, rebuilding the entire
society on socialist principles,'" wrote McChesney in a column.
The board of Free Press has included a slew of radicals, such as Obama's
former "green jobs" czar Van Jones, who resigned after it was exposed he
founded a communist organization. Meanwhile, Crawford and Kevin
Werbach, who co-directed the Obama transition team's Federal
Communications Commission Review team, are also advisory board members
at Public Knowledge, a
George Soros-funded public interest group.
Public Knowledge
claims to be bipartisan, working with groups from both sides of the
aisle, including Free Press and the
Open Society Institute.
Dawn Johnsen
Legal
Obama’s new head of the Office of Legal Counsel in the Justice
Department, Dawn Johnsen, called the legal reasoning which gave the
president broad powers to authorize "rough" interrogation of terrorists
"shockingly flawed…bogus…outlandish." She said it allowed
"horrific acts" and demanded to know "Where is the outrage? The
public outcry?" This is the person who will decide how to
interrogate terrorists. If she errs on the side of weakening
methods of questioning, there’s no chance her boss, Eric Holder the new
Attorney General, will reverse her. He approved of the
Clinton/Reno "wall" preventing intelligence from finding out what
criminal investigators had found out and took the lead in pardoning the
FALN terrorists.
What is Obama thinking? How could he
weaken so dramatically our protections against terrorism? Doesn’t
he realize that without warrantless FISA wiretaps we could never have
uncovered the plot to destroy the Brooklyn Bridge (how could we have
gotten a warrant for conversations about the bridge when we didn’t yet
know that al Qaeda had it in its sights?) Has he forgotten that we
only found the name of the operative who was tasked with destroying the
bridge because we subjected Kahlid Mohammed, the mastermind of 9-11, to
"rough" interrogation techniques? Does he really mean to leave us
vulnerable to terrorist attacks?

Institute for Healthcare Improvement, and is a professor at Harvard
Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health.
"Dr.
Berwick has dedicated his career to improving outcomes for patients and
providing better care at lower cost," Obama said. "That’s one of the
core missions facing our next CMS Administrator, and I’m confident that
Don will be an outstanding leader for the agency and the millions of
Americans it serves."
Berwick is also a partisan of state run
health care, an advocate of government re-distribution of wealth and an
ardent socialist, unless he was lying through his teeth when this clip

Obama’s pick for "regulatory czar," Harvard Law
School Professor Cass Sunstein, may be the incoming
president’s most popular appointment so far. Judging from his
resume -- best-selling author, "pre-eminent legal scholar of our time,"
and an endorsement from The Wall Street Journal -- we can almost
understand why. However, there’s one troubling portion of the new
Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) Administrator’s C.V.
that has seems to have flown under everyone’s radar: Cass Sunstein is a
radical animal rights activist.
Sunstein has made no secret of
his
devotion to the cause of establishing legal "rights" for livestock,
wildlife, and pets. He has straight out said, "We ought to ban
hunting."
Sunstein, has also advocated a policy under
which the government would "presume" someone has consented to having his
or her organs removed for transplantation into someone else when they
die unless that person has explicitly indicated that his or her organs
should not be taken. Under such a policy, hospitals would harvest
organs from people who never gave permission for this to be done.
The Washington Times
reports that a teacher was told by a 15-year-old high school
sophomore that he was having homosexual sex with an "older man."
At the very least, statutory rape occurred. Fox News reported that
the teacher violated a state law requiring that he report the abuse.
That former teacher, Kevin Jennings, is Obama's "Safe School Czar."
It's getting hard to keep track of all of Obama's problematic
appointments. Clearly, the process for vetting White House
employees has broken down.
In this one case, in which Mr.
Jennings had a real chance to protect a young boy from a sexual
predator, he not only failed to do what the law required, but actually
encouraged the relationship.
According to Mr. Jennings' own
description in a new audiotape discovered by Fox News, the 15-year-old
boy met the "older man" in a "bus station bathroom" and was taken to the
older man's home that night. When some details about the case
became public, Mr. Jennings threatened to sue another teacher who called
his failure to report the statutory rape "unethical." Mr.
Jennings' defenders asserted that there was no evidence that he was
aware the student had sex with the older man.
However, the new
audio (.mp3
format) contradicts this claim. In 2000, Mr. Jennings gave a
talk to the Iowa chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education
Network (GLSEN) , an advocacy group that promotes homosexuality
in schools. On the tape, Mr. Jennings recollected that he
told the student to make sure "to use a condom" when he was with the
older man. That he actively encouraged the relationship is
reinforced by Mr. Jennings' own description in his 1994 book, "One
Teacher in 10." In that account, the teacher boasts how he allayed
the student's concerns about the relationship to such a degree that the
15-year-old "left my office with a smile on his face that I would see
every time I saw him on the campus for the next two years, until he
graduated."
Mr. Jennings' denials about these events reveal a
lack of remorse. He has not admitted that he made mistakes in this
case, and he now refuses to answer any questions about the scandal.
Don't forget, this is a White House appointee we're talking about.
Mr. Obama should make clear what his standards are for public servants
serving at his pleasure. Encouraging and covering up man-boy
sexual activity are serious offenses. The White House should force
Mr. Jennings to come clean.
Mr. Jennings has made extremely
radical statements promoting homosexuality in schools and about his
utter contempt for religion that render him unsuitable for a prestigious
White House appointment. His job in the Obama administration is to
ensure student safety, and this scandal directly calls into question his
ability to perform that job. Mr. Jennings and Obama administration
officials refuse to answer any questions about this newly discovered
evidence. A lot of Americans want answers about this guy and how
he was approved for a job in the White House.
It gets worse.
Jennings was the founder of the GLSEN and co-chair of the lesbian, gay,
and bisexual (LGB) fundraising for Barack Obama. As the founder
and Executive Director of GLSEN, Jennings defended GLSEN during the
notorious
fistgate episode.
Obama's "Safe School Czar" is so named because he is a proponent of
"safe" sex with children.
Commies, Marxists, perverts,
rapists, and tax-cheats -- the Obama Administration -- our
government.
John P. Holdren
Science
Kathy Shaidle
writes that as part of his series of profiles on Barack Obama’s many
policy "czars," last night FOX News host Sean Hannity looked at the new
"Science Czar,"
John P. Holdren.
Holdren’s official titles are:
Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy;
Assistant to the President for Science and Technology; and Co-Chair of
the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
The longtime
Teresa and John Heinz Professor of Environmental Policy at
Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, Holdren is no
stranger to controversy.
As Hannity pointed out in his segment,
Holdren has been quoted as calling the United States the "meanest of
wealthy countries." He has also, according to Hannity, "left the door
open" to prosecuting "global warming deniers."
Holdren’s
radicalism dates back to the late 1960s.
In 1969 Holdren wrote
that it was imperative "to convince society and its leaders that there
is no alternative but the cessation of our irresponsible, all-demanding,
and all-consuming population growth." That same year, he and (the now
largely discredited) professor of population studies Paul Ehrlich
jointly predicted: "If … population control measures are not
initiated immediately and effectively, all the technology man can bring
to bear will not fend off the misery to come."
In 1971 Holdren and
Ehrlich warned that "some form of ecocatastrophe, if not thermonuclear
war, seems almost certain to overtake us before the end of the century."
Viewing capitalism as an economic system that is inherently harmful
to the natural environment, Holdren and Ehrlich in 1973 called for "a
massive campaign … to de-develop the United States" and other Western
nations in order to conserve energy and facilitate growth in
underdeveloped countries.

Vivek Kundra
Technology
After Vivek Kundra took
charge of the District of Columbia's technology operations in late 2007,
he ushered in a new era of experimentation -- adopting popular Web sites
such as YouTube, Wikipedia, and Twitter to improve city services. Now,
as the newly appointed chief information officer of the federal
government, he plans to bring the same spirit to the national stage. But
there's a huge difference in complexity and scale. The District's
technology budget is relatively tiny, and its staff concentrated, while
the federal government's budget of $71 billion is spread across dozens
of departments and agencies that often fight outside efforts to
influence their operations.
Yet Kundra is serious about bringing
the latest Net technologies to the federal government. In his
first one-on-one interview since being named to his post, the
34-year-old native of India told BusinessWeek he hopes to transform the
way the government uses technology. He plans on making it more
efficient by getting agencies to share information and computers.
And he'll use social networking Web sites to open a conversation between
the government and citizens. He also believes government should no
longer build all of its computing systems and Web sites from scratch,
the way it has in the past. "I want to make sure we're leveraging
innovations from throughout the world," he says.
Kundra faces a
daunting task. The federal government is better known for technology
fiascoes than successes. In the 1990s, the IRS took more than a
decade and $8 billion to upgrade its tax return processing system, and
the FBI's $600 million Trilogy project, aimed at streamlining the
agency's case tracking system, was so badly botched in the wake of the
September 11 attacks that some agents began referring to it as the
"tragedy" project.
